I just finished a book on Japanese geisha and was thus looking for the captions to relate to the story :. In Kyoto, tourists can pat to dress like a Geisha for a day so most people wearing Kimonos were just tourists. Seeing an actual real Gion is pretty rare except in the Gion district at night.

David Atkinson goes on the geish trail in Kyoto, Japan. Sayuri-San, one of Japan's most famous geisha, began life living in basic accommodation in a small fishing village. Sadly, as was common among families who fell on hard times, she was sold to a wealthy teahouse in Gion at the tender age of nine, where she began her training to become a geisha - a professional female entertainer.
Daniel Rook 01 Feb Even so, the Japanese year-old still manages to find the time to keep what is probably the first internet blog by an apprentice geisha, opening a small window onto a world shrouded in mystery and often misunderstood. But it is here that for the past year Ichimame has been writing about her daily endeavours to master the three-stringed shamisen and the shakuhachi bamboo flute, as well as complicated traditional dance steps. From behind bamboo blinds come sounds of laughter, clinking glasses and the melancholy chords of a shamisen.
In this geisha illustration I wanted to capture a grungy, dark, urban vibe, laced with elegant traditional Japanese elements. I got the idea from a competition to design a geisha or samurai character. I want to leave you with concepts and art techniques you can adapt and use in your own work.
